The Emsella chair
Strengthen your pelvic floor while you sit, fully clothed, in under half an hour.
Emsella treats bladder leaks without surgery, without medication and without undressing. At Scarborough Urology it is run by urologists, so you are assessed properly before anyone books you onto a chair.
What is the Emsella chair?
Emsella is a chair that uses focused electromagnetic energy to contract your pelvic floor muscles. A single 28-minute session produces thousands of contractions, far more than you could do on your own. Over a short course, the muscles that control your bladder get stronger and the leaks get fewer.
You sit on the chair fully clothed. There is no surgery, no anaesthetic, no catheter and no recovery time. It is used for women and men, including men regaining control after prostate surgery.

Why patients pick the chair.
You stay fully clothed
No undressing, no probes, no procedure. You sit on the chair, that is the whole treatment.
About 28 minutes
Short enough for a lunch break. Six sessions over three weeks is the usual course.
No downtime
Drive home, go back to work, go to the gym. There is nothing to recover from.
Urologist supervised
Assessed and overseen by a specialist, so you get the right treatment rather than the trendy one.
Who Emsella helps
Stress incontinence
Leaks when you cough, laugh, lift or run.
Urge incontinence
Sudden, strong urges that are hard to hold.
Mixed incontinence
A bit of both, which is the most common picture.
After childbirth
Pelvic floor weakness that never fully bounced back.
After prostate surgery
Men regaining control following prostatectomy.
When it is not the answer
Emsella is not right for everyone, and we would rather tell you that at the consultation than after you have paid for a course. It is generally not used if:
- You are pregnant
- You have a pacemaker or defibrillator
- You have metal or electronic implants near the pelvis
- You have a copper IUD, which we will discuss at your assessment
Your urologist screens for all of this before treatment is booked. If the chair is not suitable, we will tell you what is.
What about sexual function?
The pelvic floor does more than control your bladder. It supports sexual function in both men and women, so the same muscles Emsella works on are involved either way. Patients do ask us about this, and it is a reasonable thing to raise.
What we will not do is promise you a result. Emsella is used here primarily to treat urinary incontinence, and sexual difficulties have a range of causes, some of which need a different answer entirely. Bring it up at your consultation. You are already sitting in front of a urologist, which is the right person to ask.
How treatment works, start to finish.
- 01
Consultation
A urologist reviews your history and symptoms, rules out anything that needs a different treatment, and confirms Emsella is the right fit for you.
- 02
Treatment sessions
You sit on the chair fully clothed for about 28 minutes. Most patients do six sessions over three weeks, two sessions per week.
- 03
Follow-up
We check your progress, adjust the plan if it needs it, and talk about whether maintenance sessions make sense later on.
What does it cost?
Emsella is private-pay and not covered by OHIP. We go through pricing for the full course at your consultation so there are no surprises.
